2019 Pilot vs. 2019 CR-V: Which Honda is for you?

October 28th, 2019 by

From busy parents, to commuters, to active younger drivers, the modern crossovers and SUVs are the way to go. With modern interiors that merge flexibility with modern comforts, along with efficient engines that offer poor-surface and off-road capabilities through intelligent all-wheel drive, they are perfect for tackling the terrain of central Pennsylvania while making sure driver and passengers alike are safe and relaxed inside. It’s no wonder they have risen above sedans and even pick-up trucks to become the leading segment across State College, Tyrone, and Mechanicsburg.

The question then is, which one is the right fit? Honda offers two of the leading vehicles in the SUV segment. The 2019 Honda Pilot offers three-row seating but still manages to be economical. The 2019 Honda CR-V is the latest in a long line of award-winning compact SUVs. So which fits what you’re looking for?

Does the Honda Pilot or the Honda CR-V have more space?

The clear difference comes in size. The 2019 Honda Pilot is a much larger vehicle than the 2019 Honda CR-V, and has quite a bit more space inside. Seating for seven or eight passengers in the Pilot means you can get your entire family in for a UMass Minutemen’s game. 16 cubic feet of cargo space means you have room for coolers, a grill, and chairs for tailgating as well. If you need room for more cargo and less people – maybe you’re heading out for a camping weekend in the Berkshire Mountains, or moving out of the dorms and back to Bridgewater for the summer – the Pilot can expand and hold a maximum of 83.9 cubic feet of cargo.

The 2019 Honda CR-V may hold less, but the difference is not as big as you’d think. The CR-V only offers seating for 5, but comes with 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row – not too much less than the Pilot has. With 75.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume, it doesn’t cut into maximum carrying capabilities either. Incredibly, the CR-V does this in a much smaller body than the Pilot. The CR-V is 15.9 inches shorter in length, 4.1 inches shorter in height, and 5.6 inches skinnier than the Pilot.

In some of the tighter Boston parking garages, this will definitely make parking easier – you won’t have to drive all the way to the top level. That being said, if maximum capacity and the need to haul more than five passengers is your thing, and you don’t have to deal with tight parking concerns, the Pilot is more capable and more flexible.

Which has better Performance Features?

With the choice of a naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter engine or a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, the 2019 Honda CR-V allows you to opt for a basic driver, or something a little more complex. The pure numbers are very similar – the 2.0-liter engine offers 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, versus 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque with the turbo. Both are paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and both are offered in two- and all-wheel drive. The maximum towing capacity across the range is 1,500 pounds.

Under the hood of the 2019 Honda Pilot, a beefy 3.5-liter V6 does the work, paired with your choice of a six-speed or a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front- and all-wheel drive is offered, with the latter paired with Intelligent Traction Management to help tackle snow, sand, and mud. The V6 offers 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive, or 3,500 with two-wheel drive. Obviously, if you need to haul a pop-up trailer and a load of family up and down the hills and dales of Worcester and the surrounding area, the Pilot is the right choice.

Which vehicle gets better gas mileage: the Honda Pilot or the Honda CR-V?

That being said, not everyone is looking to conquer the great outdoors. Some folks need a vehicle that is perfect for commuting, but also great for picking up some antiques on the weekend or taking the dog to the park. They want some capabilities, but they don’t want to be paying for them at the pump every day.

The 2019 Honda CR-V is a gas-sipper so it will reduce your stops at the pump. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is remarkably efficient, and can get up to 28 MPG city and 34 MPG highway with two-wheel drive*. Even when you opt for the all-wheel drive system to keep your grip in Norwood winters, you’ll only see a drop to 27 MPG city and 33 MPG highway as the maximum fuel efficiency.

All that space and power in the 2019 Honda Pilot comes at a cost. Even in its most efficient trim, the two-wheel drive Touring with the nine-speed transmission, it only manages 20 MPG city and 27 MPG highway**. All-wheel drive brings this down to 19 MPG city and 26 MPG highway at best.

Is the Honda Pilot or the Honda CR-V more comfortable?

Modern SUVs go to great lengths to make passengers just as comfortable as the driver, if not more so. One of the best ways to help drivers keep their attention on the road ahead is to help the passengers be content.

Both the 2019 Honda CR-V and 2019 Honda Pilot do a great job of creating a welcoming, comfortable interior that helps out on short trips around Norwood or longer trips to Attleboro and beyond. This includes soft fabric seating – upgradable to leather-trimmed seats in both vehicles – along with durable trim. Cope with the frigid winters thanks to available heated front seats in the CR-V, although the Pilot also takes your rear-seat passengers into account with optional rear heated seats. The Pilot’s Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control System means that rear passengers can have their climate their way, while the Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control in the 2019 Honda CR-V only allows the temperatures to differ across the front row.

As far as entertainment and connectivity goes, both the Pilot and the CR-V can be equipped with the 7-inch display audio with high-resolution WVGA touch-screen, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration along with SiriusXM Radio. Even if you just want to stick with the base audio system, every version of the CR-V and Pilot comes with Bluetooth hands-free phone and streaming audio, helping the driver to stay focused on the road ahead.

Which vehicle has better Safety Features?

Honda pulls no punches when it comes to advanced safety features – both the 2019 Honda CR-V and the 2019 Honda Pilot are fitted with the Honda Sensing Suite. Standard on all but the base LX CR-V and standard across the Pilot trims, this system features Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking, and Road Departure Mitigation.

Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Traffic Monitor is standard on all but the base LX trim of either vehicle as well. This is why both SUVs are rated as a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS in their respective segments. We love vehicles that keep the roads and parking lots of Norwood and Boston safe.

The great thing about the 2019 Honda CR-V and the 2019 Honda Pilot is that they are both backed by Honda’s reputation for high-quality products, and by Boch Honda’s reputation for high-quality customer and vehicle service. These are two of the best SUVs on the road today, and you can’t really make a wrong choice – it’s a matter of which fits your lifestyle the best. Check them out side-by-side at Boch Honda of Norwood, we’re easy to get to from Dedham, Weymouth, West Roxbury, and the rest of Eastern Massachusetts!
